Watch: Why We Can’t Talk About Race

In honor of Black History Month, Nonotuck recently held an open agency wide DEI&B forum featuring Why We Can’t Talk About Race, a 2020 TEDxSeattle talk in which Dr. Caprice Hollins explains why conversations about race often stall and how we can move them forward. In the lecture, Dr. Hollins sheds light on why people of color and white people take different approaches to these discussions and what white people can do to help advance these conversations.

The subsequent discussion among Nonotuck staff focused on racial identity, privilege, and allyship, with participants sharing personal experiences and insights on fostering inclusivity. Conversations explored how individual upbringing and exposure to diversity shape perspectives on race, the challenges of recognizing privilege, and the importance of acknowledging rather than ignoring racial differences.

“At Nonotuck, we believe that fostering meaningful conversations about race is essential to building a more inclusive and equitable community. Events like this provide us with the opportunity to listen, learn, and grow together,” says Nonotuck President/CEO George H. Fleischner.  “Dr. Hollins’ insights challenge us to reflect on our own experiences and perspectives, and I’m grateful to lead an organization that encourages these important discussions.”
