Celebrating Latinx/Hispanic Heritage Month 2025 at Nonotuck

Nonotuck was proud to recently host a celebration of LatinX/Hispanic Heritage Month featuring two nurses from our Auburn office.  Carmen Paredes-Restrepo and Daihyana Wood shared their personal stories, cultural traditions, and experiences in healthcare in a rousing session attended by Nonotuck staff from all over the state.

Carmen spoke about her journey from Colombia to the U.S., the influence of family values, and the importance of bilingual nursing in building trust. Daihyana reflected on growing up between two cultures, and how her background helps her connect with families and provide culturally sensitive care. Both emphasized the central role of family, respect for elders, and traditions such as food, music, and community celebrations.

The event blended storytelling with humor, including discussions of “La Chancla” and the universal belief in the healing power of Vicks, while also highlighting the need for language access and cultural understanding in healthcare.

“Celebrations like this remind us how deeply culture and connection shape the care we provide and the relationships we build. Hearing Carmen and Daihyana share their experiences is a gift—it reflects the compassion, family, and sense of belonging that define Nonotuck,” says Nonotuck CEO/President George H. Fleischner.  “Our strength comes from honoring the many voices and traditions that make up who we are.”
