Our organization has been providing residential services to people with developmental disabilities in western Massachusetts for more than twenty-five years. Many years ago, driven by a mandate to implement the fundamental values and principles of the agency's mission, we charted a course into new territory when we closed fifteen group homes and moved fifty-four people into fifty distinct and personalized living arrangements. Each person was moved to a home of their choice with non-disabled people of their choice. We call this service shared living. A primary focus of shared living is to remain committed to people's unique attributes. We support the individual's interests and choices in regard to home, community and relationships. We believe that people are defined by who they are, not by their disability. We recognize that people are growing and developing individuals who have their own history and we strive to honor that. We remain committed to supporting a person's choice to take risks while insuring that they have an active voice in determining their future. Nonotuck will continue to look deeply at itself so as to insure that the people we serve, and their families, remain our primary focus. We remain committed to our own growth and development, and to imbue our service delivery in a manner consistent with the thoughts, needs and interests of the people we serve.
